“A Musical Choice for the Future”

Mission Statement/Purpose
The Mount Olive Music Academy (MOMA) is a medium for training musicians to serve the future needs of churches and other institutions in Knoxville and the surrounding area. The Academy was established in January 2002.

Goals & Objectives

  • To develop musical skills and abilities of young people, as well as adults.
  • To teach young people to take responsibility for their own actions and have respect for others.
  • To expose young people and adults to new opportunities for success.

Lessons
MOMA offers musical instruction in piano, voice, drums, acoustic/bass/tenor guitar, and violin. All lessons are held at Mount Olive Baptist located at 1601 Dandridge Avenue, Knoxville, Tennessee 37915.

First-Saturday Workshops—As a part of the curriculum, all students attend First- Saturday Workshops which are designed for the purpose of:
  • reinforcing the music concepts and applied instrument skills being taught in the individual lessons
  • providing enrichment activities that aid in the total development of musicianship
  • creating an environment of non-intimidating competition in which students can learn to work and play together
  • promoting the confidence needed for public performance
  • creating an environment that promotes respect of self and others and the development of life-long relationships with persons of shared interests and values

Recitals are held during the spring term. Students are required to participate annually and play and/or sing at least one memorized piece on the instrument(s) on which they are studying.

Field Trips—At least two (2) field trips may be scheduled during the year. These cultural arts activities usually include the Knoxville Opera, Knoxville Symphony, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville College, Bijou Theater, Knoxville Museum of Art, etc.
